Community Engagement and Reducing Barriers to Membership
Olive will share early insights from the Warrandyte Donvale Rotary Club’s recent community engagement work and the key themes that emerged. She will also outline how changing volunteer patterns are affecting local community organisations and how these findings are guiding the club’s Fit for Purpose journey, including more accessible & flexible and approaches to membership.

English Corners started five years ago in Box HIll. Now also meeting weekly at Brickworks Burwood.  Meet Mr Minwen Wu, who brings amazing energy to this very worthwhile project, providing English conversation opportunities (and fellowship) for migrants in Whitehorse and beyond.

Wings of Hope Lanka (WOHL) was established in 2013 by Rebecca Alexander, and partnered with Mukti Australia in 2016. Rebecca is WOHL Chief Operating Officer. 

WOHL invests in the lives of over 200 children and their families living in the tea plantations in central Sri Lanka, and an urban slum community in Colombo. Children sponsored by Mukti Australia receive access to tuition, educational supplies, and access to basic health care and nutrition. 

Young adults receive skills training and vocational support. Parents, particularly the mothers, receive skills training, income generation opportunities, workshops on parenting, family planning, child protection and rights awareness. WOHL also seeks to improve the living conditions and housing of families. In times of disaster, they seek to offer relief such as food rations and emergency housing. 

RCBHC with WeCan'tWait have supported improved household latrines for the tea garden families.

Isabel Blackett has over 30 years' experience supporting governments and agencies to develop sanitation service improvements in low-income urban areas. She is passionate about the need for community engagement, the needs of wormen and girls, and hygiene promotion to sustain any infrastucture investments at household, community or municipal levels.

She began work in the mid-1980s in Lesotho and then worked across Southern and East Africa with UNICEF and various European aid agencies. 

From 2005 to 2016, Isabel was a Senior Water and Sanitation Specialist at the World Bank, working on pro-poor urban sanitation programmes in Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Pacific Island countries, and South Asia.  Since then she consulted in Asia with various  development agencies and banks, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and WaterAid.

Isabel holds a degree in chemical engineering and a Master's from the Water, Engineering and Development Centre at Loughborough University, UK. She is currently based in Box Hill and volunteers with local and international non-profit organisations.

Samantha Clarke is an Ambassador for Mercy Ships Australia, with a career shaped by people, storytelling and service. She began her working life as a hairdresser, learning the power of listening and human connection, before later working in high level government and community building roles. Today, Samantha brings that same warmth and practical focus to her work with Mercy Ships, helping Australians connect with the life changing impact of safe surgery and medical training in Africa. She is passionate about making change feel personal, human and possible.
