Dear
October is Economic and Community Development Month.
We continue to increase our presence in the Community with our Youth Programs. On the 7th October we will hear from our two RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) candidates we sponsored recently to attend the camp at Phillip Island.
It is remarkable how many things we do in Rotary, are interconnected. Regarding the two candidates speaking about their experiences at RYLA; Danny Vilaykhavilai came to us from our previous contact at Box Hill Institute where we fund Scholarships for Koorie Students and Student of the Year. Zoe Frankensteiner came to us from the Rotary Citizenship Award, a relationship forged with Our Lady of Sion College in Box Hill over many years, where we award a student graduating from Year 12 a watch and the opportunity to attend RYLA.
It is fortitudinous that I will be attending the Graduation Ceremony at Our Lady of Sion College for Year 12 Students on the 14th October where we will present another Rotary Citizenship Award and connect with another future candidate for RYLA.
Just two weeks ago we facilitated taking 32 students from Box Hill High School to engage in Community work as part of their curriculum to Impact for Women where they along with members of our Club packed items such as jewellery, toiletry products and small gifts for women fleeing Domestic and Family Violence.
Also, two weeks ago we sponsored another student candidate to attend RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment), a program that explores leadership and initiative, and develops communication and problem-solving skills at Mount Martha where another 36 students attended along with older leaders/mentors. Many of the leaders were Past RYLARIANS and Rotaractors who went through many hours of training to attend the camp.
As school students resume school after their end of term holiday, so do we resume making sandwiches for the 7 Primary Schools we support for Address Classroom Hunger. Come along and engage in some banter and conversation with other members while buttering sandwiches to serve our local community. Oct 14 10-11:00am Forest Hill Chase Foodcourt near Colonial Fruit. Confirm Robyn: 0406 607 310
This month the District will be facilitating the Rotary 4-Way Speaking Competition for year 10 students at Lyndale Secondary College. This year we have seen participation from the students increase, so much so, that we will need to run 2 heats with a final in November.
We have seen progress with our Foundation Rotary District Grant at the Whitehorse Community Shed for the Community Garden Project, as the new fence has been installed securing the garden beds which Stewart Blair planted out. It now looks terrific and so inviting for the participants who actively use the shed.
We have a terrific month ahead of events and speakers. Your Board is working hard to forge a path of change that will encourage more membership engagement and growth.
I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the meetings and activities and hopefully a catch up over a cuppa.
Remember to look to the future in all you do and Create a Lasting Impact.
October project of promotion is we can't wait.
Warmly,
Malcolm Chiverton
